A nice honor for Sarah Bush

May 03, 2013 12:48 p.m.

A nice honor for Sarah Bush
It is so nice to have a client that you really like.  We always strive for strong and trusting relationships with all our clients, and in most cases we succeed.
Every once in awhile though, we are fortunate enough to have a client that really clicks.  One of those is Sarah Bush.  They are just the nicest group of people you can imagine.
That's why we are thrilled to have played a part in their recent Gold Aster Award for outstanding website.  They were the only Gold winner in their group, which included ...

The Case for Not Selling

February 21, 2013 10:57 a.m.

Recently I was invited to participate as a member of a technology panel for the annual conference of the Illinois chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association. There were four panel members and a moderator. Each panel member did a 15 minute presentation and the audience had the opportunity to ask questions. The title of the session was "Technology and Law Firm Practice Management/Marketing". The purpose being to highlight how technology can help small practices better market their services and manage their offices.

The other panel members utilized PowerPoint and spoke eloquently about their products and services, why they ...

SEO for the CMO

January 17, 2011 1:16 p.m.

Search Engine Optimization Tips for the CMO.

We often receive requests for search engine optimization services.   It's an area in which we specialize, and it would be easy to leverage the recent SEO hype and sell into this desire without questioning its motives.  But many of the people convinced they need SEO services, don't.  Or more specifically, they don't need them yet.

This week we received an inbound inquiry which is a good and typical illustration of this misplaced prioritization.

What is SEO, really?

"We are interested in an aggressive SEO program and possibly a facelift to ...

Crain's Chicago Business list of Web developers

July 21, 2010 3:17 p.m.

This week, Crain's Chicago Business published their list of Chicago Web developers and Imaginary Landscape is there, one of 52 companies.  Already, I've begun receiving congratulations.

I'm reticent to say that the list isn't a "Top Web Developers" list, but just a directory.  The cover charge for making the print list is, "Offices in the 6-county area with more than 5 full-time consultants."

There is an online version of the list with 80 companies.  It seems there is no 5 full-time consultant minimum to make the online version as there are several with one employee.

Times ...

An app in search of a name

June 23, 2009 10:50 a.m.

We have recently created a nice Web application that assists clients in building online forms. Most forms are simple tools and do not need to be custom crafted, just so long as they handle the back end properly. Forms are such a ubiquitous feature on Web sites that it becomes easy to forget that there can be some complicated maneuvers required under the hood. Because many of our clients handle sensitive information through their sites (hospitals, banks), we needed to layer in some simple-to-use yet industrial-strength security.

Of course, I could go on about how spiffy the app is, but ...

Strange reason to be shown the door

April 14, 2009 10:54 a.m.

"To be frank, from the beginning, I have felt that we have been the one being interviewed in this RFP process and not Imaginary Landscape. "

I just received this today as a reason we were eliminated from consideration for a prospect opportunity. It would seem that, in this case, asking too many questions was a fatal flaw.

Could that really be the reason?

Perhaps it was the way we were asking questions that reflected poorly on us. Condescending? Demanding? I reviewed the correspondence and spoke with the account manager who lead the opportunity but found no evidence of anything but ...

The power of the sales bell

March 31, 2009 10:57 a.m.

Many, many years ago, someone gave me a gift of a ship's bell. It is brass and designed to be mounted on a wall (or bulkhead). There is a nice braided line attached to the clapper. When struck, it has a pleasing resonance.

In a time long since past, it would have been proudly struck to mark the passage of a duty watch aboard a ship. Instead, I co-opted it for use in the workplace - to identify the moment of a closed sale.

It seems silly to the outside observer and is often joked about internally, but nothing comes ...

A thought about awards

October 28, 2008 11:08 a.m.

It's award season again and, like many firms, we have some more hardware to add to our faux mantle. This time it is a WebAward for the National Cervical Cancer Public Awareness Campaign Web site.

In all honesty and with minimal bias, it is a very nice site with a great mission and deserving of recognition. We are happy for them (and us) for the award.

Our policy about fetching awards is minimalist. I believe it is important to have some accolades adorning a wall, but I don't much care for the buy-yourself-an-award cottage industry that will provide ...

PyCon sponsorship and a booth banner

April 01, 2008 11:32 a.m.

Recently, we sponsored a national conference organized by the Python Software Foundation called PyCon. Python is a programming language that we use extensively for Web-based applications.

In the past we have sent a staff programmer to present at the conference, however we have never sponsored it. This year it was held in Chicago and the cost for sponsorship was quite reasonable - we were a "silver" sponsor which was a modest level and cost us $1,000. What was particularly nice was that they offered a 50% discount for small firms.

Part of the sponsorship was a booth in their exhibition ...

Proposals really do matter?

January 02, 2008 11:49 a.m.

I am not one for involvement, especially as it relates to government. Any time I’ve tried to dip my toe into the water of civic involvement, I am immediately disenfranchised by painfully slow decision-making and loud, slightly odd, fringe zealots.

Last year I moved to a new town. As I familiarized myself with the new surroundings, I came across a call for volunteers to join an Ad Hoc Technology Committee. The “Ad Hoc” part of it appealed to me, in that it had a shelf life. One of the topics was discussion of a new website. Given my profession ...
