0 CommentsJust got word that I will be speaking at the Greystone.Net Healthcare Internet Conference. It is a joint presentation with our client OSF Healthcare (specifically OSF's Illinois Neurological Institute). The working title for the presentation is "It Pays to Be Special - Converting a Specialty Practice Web Presence into Dollars."
I'm excited to be co-presenting as it combines two of my favorite Web-related topics: monetizing a website and website security. My specific role will be to focus on the methodology we used to make the online process HIPAA compliant, especially as it relates to HITECH.
Much of the ...

0 CommentsHIPAA’s HITECH rule is nothing if not complicated. Simply finding a clear and unambiguous description of what must be done to protect your website is a significant research project in itself. Its path starts at the Federal Register, then to the Department of Health and Human Services with a brief but important detour to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. And that’s if you don’t get sidetracked by quasi-official looking sites like hipaa.com, hipaaguide.net and hipaasurvivalguide.com.
As a Web developer with a specialty in creating and maintaining hospital websites, it is important that ...

Imaginary Landscape was highlighted in a recent blog post as one of only two Corporate Members of the Django Software Foundation. The post appears on the Django Project website and was written by DSF President Russell Keith-Magee.
"Membership of the DSF is one tangible way that your company can publicly demonstrate its support for the Django project, and give back to the Open Source community that has developed Django," wrote Keith-Magee.
Django is the main tool used by Imaginary Landscape to create interactive and modular websites for its clients.
"We are happy to support the Django Software Foundation and its ...

Last week, Imaginary Landscape launched a redesigned site dedicated to the technology side of our business at chicagodjango.com. Django is the Web application framework we use to construct interactive websites.
Generally speaking, purchasers of Web development services fall into two audience groups - tech and non-tech. For example and again, generally speaking, Web-related decision making remains largely the purview of marketing. This is a traditionally non-technical audience. Their concerns include brand continuity, aesthetics, ease of use and user-facing functionality. These are all extremely important to a Web-based experience.
This site, imagescape.com, speaks to this audience. It was designed with ...

We were happy to see the May 9, 2011 profile of Ifbyphone Inc. in Crain's Chicago Business. Ifbyphone is a Chicago-based startup created to bring big phone system features to small companies.
Imaginary Landscape has been a customer of Ifbyphone since 2009. The service allows us to provide callers a choice of different voicemail boxes and have specific actions tied with each box.
As a small technology firm, we do not staff 24 hours a day. However, we wanted to make sure that our clients could contact us during off hours. Before Ifbyphone, this was no simple nor affordable ...

Mobile computing is the new frontier of the online world, and Web developers are creating mobile-enabled Web applications that explore this frontier in new and exciting ways. 2010 showed that 3 percent of all Internet browsing activity occurred on mobile browsers, up from 1 percent at the end of 2009. As people put more faith in mobile devices, the impact of security breaches can be all the more devastating. From the perspective of a mobile Web application developer, mobile devices can be an additional entry point into an application. Creating mobile-friendly Web applications with security as a top priority is ...

According to a new study released in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, 93% of passwords used to safeguard protected health information were cracked utilizing commercially available password cracking software.
The study was conducted by researchers at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario.
The test was conducted using files provided by volunteer stakeholders in 15 clinical trials. And, although the samples were not representative of all clinical trials in Canada, they were "likely examples of trials where the stakeholders were sufficiently comfortable with their security practices."
"In all cases the ...

1 CommentsWe are creatures of meaning. Everyone wants to know the meaning of things, but not everything has meaning or can be interpreted the same way. As Freud famously said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” Nowhere is this more apropos than in the meaning of website statistics, and especially in the often-misunderstood analytics metric: Bounce Rate.
This from Google:
Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page.
This is its exact definition. But, Google goes on to provide an interpretation:
Use this metric to measure ...

Google analytics did not introduce formal mobile device reporting until November of 2009, but that does not mean you cannot track your mobile traffic before that time. There are a large number of discussions about how to configure current GA features to track mobile visits, but how do you track historical information and compare apples to apples if you did not configure Advanced Segments or set up other tracking methods a year or two ago? Here are a number of ways in which to track your mobile device site visits previous to November 2009:
