Over the years, we have utilized a number of managed hosting companies for our websites. These are the types of companies that take security and redundancy seriously. Big thick walls, many different connections to Internet backbones, multiple power sources, generator backup are just some of the characteristics. Even, in Rackspace's case, a 100% Uptime Guarantee.
Not so yesterday. In an event reminiscent of the recent 365 Main outage that affected San Francisco, Rackspace experienced a couple of mishaps that brought its Dallas/Ft. Worth datacenter to its knees, and three Imaginary Landscape Web servers with it.
Rackspace has a nice (if not puffy) description of the particulars on its website. The company line reads, "As a precautionary measure we decided to take some customers' servers offline." Since all of our Dallas/Ft. Worth servers went dark, it makes me wonder how I get on the "A" list at Rackspace.
Thankfully, four of our servers were unaffected because the were in other Rackspace datacenters, which made for a somewhat sane night, but that's little consolation.
I can only imagine the chaos that was the Dallas/Ft. Worth datacenter last night. To their credit, I was able to call and receive updates throughout the evening and even received a personal call around 11pm last night.
There is some chatter in the MyRackspace portal about leaving them and finding another hosting company. I suspect that will die down as the dust settles. For Imaginary, we're staying put. We've been with them for years and this is the first "catastrophic" event we've experienced.
But I would like to know where I send the case of Scotch to make sure I'm on the other side of "some customers" next time.
