PTVupgrade Web site gets 'Slashdotted', server handles load without incident

It began at 6:50am on Wednesday, December 10th. At that moment, Imaginary Landscape client PTVupgrade was mentioned on the popular slashdot.com site, including a hyperlink to ptvupgrade.com.

"We immediately recognized something was happening on the server hosting the PTVupgrade site, "said Ken Stox technology partner for Imaginary Landscape. "Within seconds, the load increased exponentially."

Between 7:00am on Wednesday and 8:00am the following day, a total of 25 hours, the PTVupgrade site delivered 322,900 page views. That level of traffic equates to nearly 10 million page views per month.

Of particular note is the fact that the PTVupgrade site is located on a shared server. While it was serving the PTVupgrade pages, the server was simultaneously serving pages for several other Web sites.

"Once we determined the cause, we took steps to ensure the request load would not overwhelm the server," continued Stox. "We are pleased to report that the server successfully handled the load without incident."

"I was extremely impressed with Imaginary Landscape and their response," said Lou Jacob, president of PTVupgrade. "They notified me of the increased traffic and its origin, and kept me informed throughout the day. To experience a spike of this magnitude and continue to effectively serve web traffic is a credit to their system administration experience and ability."

PTVupgrade is the original professional service for upgrading TiVo Personal TV receivers. Slashdot is the world-leading discussion site for the technically inclined. PTVupgrade was mentioned in a discussion about TiVo.

Imaginary Landscape server "Hadron" located in Texas weathered the storm utilizing open source software such as the FreeBSD operating system, Apache Web server, PostgreSQL relational database system and Zope application development environment.
